Legal advice for pension matters

Why Payung Seri

Specialist Knowledge Where It Counts

Pension law is not a sideline for us. It is the work we do every day — and that focus makes a practical difference.

Our Advantages

What Payung Seri Brings to Your Matter

These are the specific features of our practice that clients find most valuable — drawn from what they tell us actually made a difference.

Dedicated Pension Focus

Our practice does not take on employment disputes, property transactions or family law. Pension matters are what we do, which means we are not learning your area of law alongside your case.

Written Clarity at Every Stage

Every assessment, every update and every change in our view is provided in writing. You should never have to rely on your memory of a phone call to know where your matter stands.

Known Fees Before You Commit

Our first meeting and written opinion have fixed, published fees. For representation matters, the fee is agreed in writing before any further work starts. No open-ended arrangements.

Documents Written for People

Our written opinions are structured so that a client and their family can read and understand them without needing a lawyer in the room. Plain language is not a compromise on rigour.

Multilingual Consultations

Our office conducts meetings in English, Bahasa Malaysia and selected other languages. You should be able to explain your situation in the language that comes most naturally to you.

Remote Consultations Available

Clients outside Kuching can attend their first meeting by telephone or video. This means our services are accessible to clients across Sarawak and further afield in Malaysia.

In More Detail

Five Areas Where Our Approach Differs

Expertise Developed Over Years of Pension Work

Our principal lawyer has worked in pension and employee benefits law since 2004. That is not general legal experience redirected at a pension question — it is two decades of handling exactly this kind of matter. We know the scheme rules, the regulatory history and the common points of dispute because we have worked through them repeatedly, not because we researched them for your file.

This depth means we can identify what is actually at stake in a file quickly, and avoid spending your money on work that will not move the matter forward.

A Structured Process That Keeps Cases Moving

Each service has a defined scope and a timeline we commit to. The Written Opinion is delivered within three weeks. Representation matters begin with a written scope document before any hearing preparation starts. We do not take on more files than we can manage at the standard we expect of ourselves.

Clients tell us that this predictability — knowing when they will hear from us and in what form — is as valuable as the legal advice itself.

A Practice That Treats Clients as Adults

We do not use jargon without explanation. We do not tell clients what they want to hear when the documents point elsewhere. When our assessment is that no further action is worthwhile, we say so in writing — because that is more useful than vague encouragement to continue spending money on a matter that has reached its limit.

The first meeting is designed to give you enough information to make your own decision about whether to go further. You leave with notes, a document list and no expectation that you return.

Pricing That Reflects the Work Involved

Our fees are set to reflect the actual time and skill a matter requires, not a premium for specialist branding. A first meeting is RM 160. A written opinion is RM 390. Representation begins at RM 615. These figures are published because we think clients should be able to assess value before committing to any step.

If a matter changes in scope, we discuss the implications with the client before proceeding, not after.

Honest Reporting on Where a Matter Is Going

On representation matters, clients receive written updates whenever our assessment of the case changes — not on a fixed schedule, but whenever the position actually shifts. That might be when new documents arrive, when a counterparty's position becomes clearer, or when a procedural development changes what is possible.

This means you are never waiting to find out something important, and you are not receiving updates that contain nothing new just to maintain the appearance of activity.

How We Compare

Specialist vs General Practice

Many legal practices will accept pension instructions. Fewer have built their work specifically around pension matters. The difference becomes apparent in the details.

What Sets Us Apart

Features Specific to Payung Seri

A Household Context Panel

At first meetings we help the client identify whether the matter concerns them personally, a spouse, a parent or a dependant. This matters because the legal routes and entitlements differ — and many clients are not certain which situation applies to them when they first make contact.

Options Compared Side by Side

Written opinions include a decision-support table that sets out each available route with its estimated effort, cost and typical duration. This lets clients compare their options in one place without having to reconstruct the analysis from narrative text.

Language Note on Every File

We record at the outset which languages are suitable for each client's meetings and correspondence. This is not a formality — it affects how we communicate throughout and ensures that nothing important is lost because a document was not in the right language.

No Obligation at the First Meeting

The first meeting is structured as a complete service in itself. Clients leave with meeting notes and a document checklist. There is no expectation that they return, and no follow-up sales call. If they decide to proceed, they do so because the meeting gave them enough information to make that decision comfortably.
