Our Story

How Payung Seri Came to Be

Payung Seri grew out of a straightforward observation: many people in Sarawak and across Malaysia reach retirement age with unresolved questions about their pension entitlements, but they find the legal process difficult to navigate alone. A letter from a former employer, a rejected claim from a scheme administrator, or an unexplained shortfall in contributions — each of these situations can involve real money and significant personal consequence, yet the path to addressing them is rarely clear.

The practice was founded in Kuching because Sarawak has a distinctive employment landscape — public sector workers, plantation staff, state government employees and private sector workers all sit alongside each other, and their pension arrangements reflect that variety. We chose to base our work here because we knew the context well and because we felt that access to legal advice on pension matters should not require travelling to Kuala Lumpur or hiring a firm unfamiliar with the region.

Our approach has stayed consistent since we opened: we tell clients honestly what their documents show, what arguments are available, and what each path is likely to cost in time and fees. We do not inflate expectations. When we believe no further action is worthwhile, we say so in writing. That candour takes more effort than simply accepting instructions, but it is the only basis on which we think a legal relationship works well over the months a complex matter can take.

Over the years we have handled matters involving EPF contributions, civil service pension schemes, occupational arrangements and dependant entitlements. Each case has its own facts, and we treat it that way.
